How many bloggers does it take to change a light bulb? One – you’re looking at him. That’s right. I’m a commercial electrician who moonlights as a men’s style blogger.

Monday through Friday, I get home and swap my electrician garb for tapered slacks or stylish joggers, pair either with a colorful button-down, and add the necessary accessories. I like showcasing my ever-evolving “street style” to my online community.

My style blog, Blue Collar Prep, started 6 years ago when I felt the urge to do something creative. Self-motivated and inspired to better understand my own style, I talked things over with my wife, who encouraged me to start documenting my own personal style. Blue Collar Prep was born. Turned out, it was exactly the outlet (pardon the pun) I’d been looking for.

If you’re wondering – yes – people from each of my two worlds look at me sideways when they learn about the other. I kind of like that.

The shift from electrician to style arbiter never seemed radical to me (thank goodness), but looking back, I realize it required an abrupt 90-degree turn with nothing but an uncertain outcome to offer. I have my dad to thank for having the fortitude to be fearless in the face of change. He’s always encouraged me to try new things and take risks.

I’m trying to pay that wisdom forward to my five-year-old (and mini-me), Nate. Whether following me around at my day job or helping out with Blue Collar Prep, he takes in every little detail. I hope he’s learning more than just how to dress well. I want him to know that it’s ok to do the unexpected, and that if you’re willing to take a risk, you might just discover something better than you could have ever imagined.
