Crafting whiskey is a time-tested art form that requires patience and attention to detail. Penny's Proof is the journey we share with Whiskey Thieves and stands as our long-term commitment to revitalizing a great Maryland industry. Alongside whiskey fans around the world, we strive to inspire a global passion for American rye whiskey, and pay homage to our 40-foot copper column still, Penny.

Here in 2022, our Penny's Proof journey turns the page on a new chapter. We are excited to introduce our Maryland Grown Series, a line of 100% Maryland distilled straight rye whiskies, made entirely with local grains and aged in barrels crafted from oak trees grown across our state. This first release, is 2.5-years-old, and will continue to mature in age over time.

The Story of Penny's Proof

Back in 2013, we knew of two things: Maryland’s extraordinary history of distilling Rye Whiskey and the pure, limestone-filtered spring water cascading through Sagamore Farm. So we set off to build a world-class place and produce a world-class product to revive the vibrant history of Maryland Rye Whiskey.

We spent two years studying the calcium-rich water at the Sagamore Farm House and those same two years sketching, rendering, and debating the design of our waterfront distillery.

To inspire a global passion for Maryland Rye Whiskey, everything matters. The grain, the barrel char, the final flavor profile. We sent back 18-wheelers full of rye because they weren’t good enough. We redesigned our bottle, updated our packaging line, and re-calibrated most of our gears and gauges.

In 2017, our Whiskey Thieves named the world’s only 40-foot mirrored finished copper column still, Penny. And she’s been distilling Maryland spirits at our Port Covington distillery ever since.

We welcomed Whiskey Thieves on a chilly November morning in 2019 to purchase our 2.5-year-old Penny’s Proof for a single penny. The energy was off the charts and we couldn’t wait to do it again a year later.

2020 changed everyone’s plans, but almost 1,000 Whiskey Thieves waited patiently for their chance to receive a three-pack, even though we only had 597 of them. Whiskey Thieves showed their continued devotion to Maryland Rye would not be deterred, and we sold-out again.

In 2021, our Maryland distilled straight rye whiskey turned 4.5-years-old. Through the course of a decade, Sagamore Spirit teammates were resilient and made a consistent effort at our Baltimore distillery to craft the best rye whiskey imaginable.

Along with Penny's Proof, we announced the release of our first-ever Bottled in Bond 100-proof Straight Rye Whiskey. This release signified our commitment to the highest level of excellence and authenticity. Enacted in 1897, the Bottled in Bond distinction is a marker of distilling quality and transparency. It showcased our first batch of whiskey distilled in Maryland and our team couldn't have been more proud to share it with you.

2021 Penny’s Proof Release

The finale of our first Penny's Proof journey. We released a 4.5-year-old Maryland-made Rye Whiskey from the first distillate we placed in barrels in April 2017, plus our first Bottled-in-Bond!

2020 Penny’s Proof Release

We doubled the release of a 3.5-year-old Maryland-made Rye Whiskey. You still came out in force as we made pandemic-proof plans. Sold out again with a curbside pick-up and line of cars as far as the eye could see.

2019 Penny’s Proof Release

Our inaugural release - It was 297 bottles of our 2.5-year-old Maryland-made Rye Whiskey available to over 15,000 Whiskey Thieves who braved the cold and the sell-out trend began!
